| Abstract | The article intends to make a contribution to the research on French collocations, which is not as well developed as the research on English collocations. The aim is to show that the type of collocation composed of an adjective and an adverb on "-ment" is productive and frequent and that it should therefore be known by the foreign language learner. Though the existence of this type of collocations was discovered by Charles Bally at the beginning of the 20th century, it has not yet been analysed. Which collocator is usual for a certain adjective is fixed in the language norm. Consequently, adjective-adverb-collocations are not combined freely by the speaker but only reproduced and are stored in the memory of every native speaker. Errors resulting from the transfer of collocational patterns from the mother tongue to the foreign language normally do not prevent communication but unmask the speaker as a foreign language learner. Advanced learners should therefore know adjective-adverb collocations. (Verlag, adapt.). |
