Abstract | Discusses the semiotic dynamics of collective mourning processes, and the social function of public memorials. The discussion is organized around the ideas formulated in Trauma and the Memory of Politics, by author Jenny Edkins. Psychological theoretical questions pertaining to Edkins' work are addressed on the basis of her observations of the functions of memorials. Edkins' nearly identical definition of individual and collective trauma is critically examined. In elaborating the potential functions of memorials, a focus is placed on the reinforcement of trust in nation-states, the creation of interpersonal links, as well as communal mourning and processes. Other topics include: (1) the appropriateness of different notions of temporality; (2) the relationship between the prevention of forgetfulness, the maintenance of trauma, and the enabling of innovation; and (3) the articulation of the person versus the collective.
