Abstract | After having first been severed from the teaching profession in 1988, head teachers today are being asked to adapt themselves to a new management culture. This is being achieved by initiating closer ties with the body of subject inspectors and, to a larger extent, with all the other managers of the French national education system, now regrouped under the generic title of "New Public Managers". The effects awaited on the teaching activity have been clearly announced: the objective is to redefine both the missions of schools and those of the teaching professionals a whole. Such a professional conversion implies, however, a new head teacher commitment and a reshuffling of loyalties. Such a move towards the new opposition of intermediate manager has not, however, been achieved without head teacher resistance, as the redefinition of the head teacher profession, though wiled on by the head teachers themselves, has simultaneously created novel professional tensions.
