| Abstract | At present in Gambia, the total number of pupils enrolled in British model primary schools (= schools conforming the British model) is much higher than the number of those enrolled in the Koranic formal schools or madrasa. However, it should be pointed out that the population of these Koranic centres continues to increase (although slowly) throughout the country. The British model schools are still seen by the rural population as a foreign element within their culture and religion. In fact, Western educational methods have been seen as an intrusive element from their very introduction. Rural schools, especially the schools of the Sarahole people are found in communities where religious practices govern the organisation of the social life of the community to a high degree, and where the religious authorities are highly influential. ... The competition between the education system which follows the British model and that of the Koranic schools is obvious im Gambia. The teachers from both types of schools use different strategies to attract families to their educational systems. [The article analyses development and history of the two competing school models].
