Abstract | In challenging even recent models of comparative inquiry, Schriewer implicitly raises the issue of the compatibility of rival epistemological approaches. This issue is taken up by analyzing the application of competing ontologies to a given problem, by exploring how these presuppositions about the way the world is constructed govern the differential meanings imposed on educational issues ... . The authors consider studies of educational designs in socialist states - one conducted by Joseph Farrell of Allende's Chile in the early 1979s and the other by Jonathan Jansen of Mugabe's Zimbabwe in the late 1980s. [The essay is divided into the following sections:] 1: Religion and politics in the formation and demise of socialist educational policy: Similarities of issue, differences in geocultural context. 2. Similarities of issues and political conditions. 3. Similarity of methods and outcomes. 4. Divergent explanations for similar outcomes. 5. Divergent ontological platforms. (DIPF/Orig.). |
