| Abstract | Learning by doing, a widely accepted approach for beginning foreign language learners, inevitably involves, for young learners, play in many forms. The British linguist David Crystal in his book Language Play, makes a strong case for more play in mother-tongue English teaching. By analogy it would seem logical to stress this affective and motivational aspect of language acquisition in second language learning environments. Various examples are given of children's games from the English-speaking world. Examples of other games - for instance, counting games used by generations of parents - are included in so far as they are popular with children in the target cultures and have versions which can be played out by children without elaborate preparation.
