Abstract | In modern time, knowledge has become the principal commodity of higher education.... Four specific aspects of the,, knowledge transformation" can be identified: first, the disintegration of the epistemological tradition of unified science and its consequences; second, the attempts at a new synthesis of cognitive, normative, and aesthetic knowledge; third, the move beyond scientific ways of knowing; and finally, a better understanding of the intimate connection between knowing and power. These changes are most pertinent to forms of knowledge regarding social and human reality.... Against this background the author discusses how German higher education policy has responded to the challenges that emerge from these transformations.... He stresses the significance of the University of Frankfurt/Oder which was formally opened in 1991 as an international university, appropriately located in a border-city adjacent to Poland. It has the special mandate to provide a linkage mechanism between Eastern Europe and Western Europe through teaching and research programs. (HoF/Text übernommen/St.). |
