Abstract | Ethiopia is a perennial example of one of the most educationally disadvantaged countries in the world [less than 50 % of the children are in primary schools, only a third of those attending school were girls]. Furthermore, the gender gap has been widening in the context of increasing primary enrollments. ... This article seeks to identify some of the important individual and household characteristics determining the probability of a child attending and completing primary school in Ethiopia, and to see how these characteristics differ by gender. Following a review of literature on gender and primary schooling in Ethiopia, data from our survey are used to examine the individual and household characteristics that have a significant impact on the probability of a boy or girl attending and completing primary school in two regions of the country. The results are completed by our findings from qualitative research that examines the ways in which cultural and school related constraints interact with economic factors to provide important explanations for the persistence of the gender gap in enrollment.
