| Abstract | The article presents an analysis of the German negation affix "ent-" within Baker's (1988) framework, which is combined with the theory of Transparent Logical Form (TLF) in the style of von Stechow (1996b) or Beck (1996). Von Stechow's analysis of the resultative construction is adopted, but certain details of the morphology/syntax/semantics interface are elaborated. In particular it is claimed that each lexical category carries exactly one phonological morpheme (P-morpheme), but can be associated with more than one semantic morpheme (S-morpheme). In this sense the approach is autosegmental. The syntactic structure is determined by the category information alone. If a category is associated with more than one S-morpheme, there will be one proper S-morpheme, and the other S-morphemes will be interpreted as marking the obligatory semantic environment of the category, pointing to functional heads where the required semantic information is located. The effect is that adverbs like "wieder" (again) may modify parts of a semantically complex verb, although the adverb itself is outside the complex morphological form. The analysis may be regarded as an interpretation of Baker's theory of incorporation as a checking theory, in the spirit of the Minimalist Program.
