| Abstract | Literary semantics is now a fairly well discipline, witnessed for example, by the existence of an international academic association of scholars working in this field. Nonetheless, the author believes that the precise status of this discipline, especially its methodological rules and its underpinning epistemological assumptions, is by no means clear. Therefore, he raises a number of metatheoretical questions regarding some of the problems the study of literary semantics faces. He points out three major assumptions underlying the project of a literary semantics. A discipline called "literary semantics" must be based, it seems, on the idea that (a) there is a reasonably well-defined set of objects called literary texts; (b) there either is or can be a systematic study of the meanings of such texts: (c) the construction of meaning in literary texts is sufficiently different from that found in non-literary texts; and (d) the systematic study of the meanings of literary texts is something that differs from, and is perhaps superior to, or at least equally important as, other more hermeneutical approaches to the study of literary texts.
