| Abstract | Among subjects affected by major hearing deficiency, vocal production is late in developing and also fluctuates. It is probable that theses fluctuations, not only in terms of quantity but also of quality, appear at an early stage. What are the consequences of these fluctuations on the quality of interaction between the young deaf child and those close to him? Are the child's parents able to recognise his attempts at vocalization as attempts to communicate? Can they discern their meaning and respond adequately, particularly by means of imitating the sounds produced? In what way is it possible to assimilate these vocalisations with social intercations and thereby guarantee coherence of sound which according to Veneziano, represents the beginnings of future semantic coherence. Through an analysis of dyade production between the adult and young deaf child, we shall attempt to answer these questions and to study the adult's role in the process of converting sounds produced by the child with hearing deficiency into the linguistic meaning.
