AbstractThe article is subdivided into the following chapters: 1) A project, its motivation, and its objectives; 2) The upper Rhine region - an area of manifold intermeshing networks with a European physiognomy; 3) The teacher training systems in the three countries of the Upper Rhine region; 4) The most important elements in teacher training and their relation to one another. The author summarizes the results of his exploration as follows: "On the whole, differences predominate in the training of kindergarten teachers as well as primary school teachers of the three neighbor countries. On the whole the points of similarity and points of difference in the training of teachers for secondary level I roughly balance one another out. The most similarities are to be found in training of Gymnasium and vocational school teachers." He then draws the conclusion that "it is not at all desirable for teacher training systems in each of the areas discussed to converge. However, over the long term, and not least because of further processes toward modernization and professionalization, there will be some convergence." The regional work group which initiated the project "Becoming a teacher in the Upper Rhine Region" intends to draft recommendations in these areas on completion of their project as a contribution to international understanding and cooperation, as well as to promoting mutual support and enrichment through learning from one' s neighbor.
