| Abstract | Harold Pinter's latest play immediately roused more anxious questioning than ever as to a possible method of tackling this dramatist's increasingly enigmatic art. In attempting an enlightenment of Ashes to Ashes (September 1996) it has proved helpful to add to general methods of literary theory the tools of comparative and intertextual analysis, the interpretation of theatrical facts as well as a considerable amount of interdisciplinary research. In Ashes to Ashes the themes of Pinter's early plays of love and menace are blended with the political and humane concerns of his drama of the eighties as well as with the Holocaust- and death-motives as introduced inMoonlight (1993), and at the same time these themes are extended into a parable on man's eternal existential conflict and "the terror of the loneliness of the human situation". Pinter's dramatic language with its utmost economy and superior poetic qualities has equally reached a climax; it fuses with the contents to a degree that can only be described as perfectly Pinteresque.
