AbstractIt is a commonplace of English-German contrastive linguistics and English-German translation studies that German allows complex premodification in an NP in cases where English favours, or is restricted to, postmodification, e. g. ein der Kirche übergeordneter Staat vs. a state superordinate to the Church, etc. But observers of developments in English can attest numerous cases like: a...get-wed-and-live-in't-next-street-to-her-mother attitude (The Independent) or: this never, by me, to be forgotten hunchback in the park (Dylan Thomas). This paper looks first at configurational and functional arguments for this restriction and exceptions to it (right- vs. left-branching; directionality; attribute vs. classifier, etc.) and then at the results of a survey of 60 informants' acceptability judgements. It is suggested that there is a scale of configurational-functional factors that may broadly account for the cline of acceptability in English premodification. Attested data can be classified as cases of: i) characterization by mention; ii) complex classifiers; and iii) - with 6 structural subtypes - description by predicate phrase. A look at historical data gleaned from Visser's Historical Syntax of the English Language suggests that the kind of directionality in German premodification was present in late Middle English and later replaced by English directionality. It is argued finally that German complex premodification, which is normally equivalent to relativization, depends on adjectivization of predicates together with their adjuncts, while the main type of English complex premodification, which is not typically equivalent to relativization, depends on a truncated predicate functioning adjectivally (i. e. without category change).
