Abstract | Using data from the World Values Surveys 1980-83 and 1990-93 the author analyses the answers to the question: "Here is a list of various changes in your way of life that might take place in the near future" and people were asked if they regard the various items as a good or bad thing. Among these changes was the option "greater respect for authority". The national answers vary tremendously: 91 % of the Nigerians say that greater respect for authority would be good and only 9 % of the Japanese do so. The rich industrial societies in general are more critical to authority. Interpreting the results, the author "confirms his thesis of a progressive cultural shift in industrial societies from materialistic, security-centered orientations, towards post-materialistic, rather affective and expressive orientations towards others. He points out a crucial aspect of this shift for democratic citizenship: the decline in respect for authority, which suggests another way of practicing democratic politics and, hence, raises a new civic and political challenge for education.
