Abstract | Chapters 2-4 will focus on American beginning teachers, and chapters 5-7 concentrate on Japanese beginning teachers. Chapters 2 and 5 will provide detailed accounts of how beginning teachers in two cultures learn to teach. The purpose is to offer an analysis of events: what beginning teachers did, what problemes they encountered, and what strategies they employed to solve them. Chapters 3 and 6 will focus on the strategies that beginning teachers developed to deal with child motivation and control, which are critical concepts in teaching. Special attention will be given to classroom routines, management, interaction, and the development of child attitudes toward learning. Chapter 4 and chapter 7 will examine the perspectives that beginning teachers developed in the process of socialization. Chapter 8 will offer a comparative cultural perspective.
