Abstract | With the growth of internationalization in higher education, a growing number of U.S. students are undertaking doctoral study in this field. Limited attention has been given to how these students receive training for conducting international research. This chapter provides insight into the key issues related to doctoral student international research preparation, a topic that is underemphasized in research training. The chapter presents a theoretical approach to doctoral research training utilizing Bronfenbrenner's (1994) Ecological System Theory as a framework. From this framework, the authors have adapted an ecological model for doctoral researcher training, which is used to make recommendations for both individual and programmatic development in doctoral education.
