Abstract	One teacher's experience with traditional language tests suggested that the tests did not reflect the kind of communicative language learning going on in the classroom and might be counterproductive. As a result, an experiment in oral testing was undertaken in which examinees were required to process natural discourse and to relate language to contexts outside the classroom, according to the theory of John Oller. Subjects were economics students in their fourth year of English language study in an Italian university. Guidelines for the oral test were given to the students and discussed in class. Analysis of the test results and testing process provided information about the following: (1) the occurrence of spontaneous language exchanges; (2) structure of responses; (3) the making of inferences and predictions about the language; (4) negotiation of meaning; (5) the kinds of rhetorical acts appearing in the responses of the examinees; (6) the effects of interaction with peers during the test; (7) examinee participation and motivation; (8) self-correction; (9) the effect of making the examinees responsible for the content of the test; and (10) the examiner's role.
