Abstract	This chapter is the first detailed work on women and sport in Syria. The overview of Syria, the development, organisation and concerns for women and sport illustrate the prioritising of a secular Arab identity that has survived a long period of social and political unrest. In many ways, uncertainty and instability are ongoing in terms of geographical location and reputation as a homeland for refugees for displaced Arab people from neighbouring countries. The author's own life history exemplifies the message that opportunities do exist for girls and women in the field of physical education and sport in Syria. Gender, religion and ethnicity need not be barriers to participation. The post-1946 independence period has seen a growth in the provision of school-based, community and competition sports for girls and women. The evidence from the General Sports Federation's 2007 report, however, indicates that many women are not engaging with such provision, and that sport remains a male domain. Suggestions and recommendations are offered, and further research will develop an understanding of how to address the current imbalance in gender equity. Einleitung (gekürzt).
