Abstract	This paper investigates the problem of knowledge production and legitimation at the University of Cyprus. The problem is examined against the background of extant theory on the relationship between universities of the 'center' and those of the 'periphery' and, more specifically, of the theory about the conflict between centrality and localism, as this is experienced by peripherical universities that aspire for centrality. ... The paper consists of three major sections: the first presents the historical dimension; the second gives an account of the current social, economic and political realities of the island; and the third explores the conflict between the society and the academics as far as the role of the university is concerned, investigates how the academics' conceptions about the role of the university affect the knowledge constructed and the legitimation provided, and explains the outcome of the conflict in the particular context. of Cyprus.
