Abstract | The conference "Implementing Recent Federal Legislation" held in St. Petersburg, Florida, in January 1995, assembled approximately 100 participants - sociologists of education and policy-makers at the federal, state, and local levels. The papers and roundtable discussions at this conference form the eight parts of this book: systemic reform - sociology and educational policy; national standards for content and performance; opportunity-to-learn standards; school-to-work opportunities act; school, parent, and community support; professional development; goals 2000: safe, disciplined, and drug-free schools; implications of the goals 2000 legislation. "The general approach is ' top-down support for bottom-up reform' with goals and standards playing a central role as organizing principles. The essays in this volume use sociological knowledge and insights to explore the possibilities, paradoxes, and problems of such an approach." (DIPF/St.). |
