Abstract | Forschungsmethode: deskriptiv. Die Veroeffentlichung enthaelt quantitative Daten. "Placed in the contextof the issues that form the contemporary debate as well as the measured trends in student numbers, educational expenditures and institutional structures, the report examines the major features of education's changing socio-economic environment. These include structural changes in employment and the labour market, the outstanding problem of unemployment, shorter working time, and rapid technological development. No less important are social and cultural aspects of current change and the report gives particular emphasis to the position of the socially disadvantaged, cultural minorities and migrants, and women, as well as discussing the family, the community, and values in education. The more general socio-economic issues are complemented by the specific questions that arise in each of the main sectors of the education systems of OECD countries, and compulsory schooling, post- compulsory education and training, and higher education are considered in turn. Dominant themes include the importance of improving the quality of schooling, the low- achievement problem, bridging the divide between education and training, opening more widely education's doors to adults, and maintaining and protecting research capacity. Questions of expenditure and finace, crucial to the implementation of educational policies, are seperately identified and an overview of the report and its conclusions are contained in the final chapter.
