"In order to assist (Science an Engineering Research council) im planning future provision of support for postgraduate courses in the different (Information Technology) subject areas, and the balance between supporting specialist and conversion training (Institute of Manpower Studies) were commissioned in 1984 to carry out a further study to continue the monitoring of postgraduate employment and provide an update on how demands from employers for IT postgraduates might be changing. Chapter 2 of this report discusses the expanded 1983/84 portfolio of It advanced courses in terms of provision of training across the different IT subjects areas, pattern of students demand and the involvement of employers in individual courses, using information provided by departments. Chapter 3 and 4 presents information on the student surveys, Chapter 3 covering graduates from advanced courses in 1983-84, while Chapter 4 is about research students. Both chapters include a discussion of the graduates themselves, their personal characteristics and education backgrounds, their experiences in the employment market, and the type of work taken up. Particular attention is given in Chapter 3 to the different experiences and employment of conversion and specialist course students. Chapter 5 is based on the employers' discussion and postal survey and covers their IT skill and employment requirement now and in the future, graduate recruitment needs generally and also in relation to the product of the conversion courses, view on postgraduate training and links with higher education. A number of case studies of employers from different sectors is presented in Appendix C." (author's abstract) ((en)) |
