Abstract	Forschungsmethode: Dokumentation. "In a time of change and development in higher education, a field of increasing importance is that of research having higher education as its object. More than an academic field of research, it is one which may throw light on the functioning and various aspects of the higher education sub-system and therefore be of great value for those responsible for its operation and development. In the above context and among its thematic activities, the Unesco European Centre for Higher Education (CEPES) decided in 1979 to prepare, on the basis of returns to a questionnaire, an international directory providing comprehensive information on institutions and international organizations engaged in research on higher education in the European region, as defined by Unesco (all countries in geographical Europe, together with Canada, Israel and the United States of America). The objective of the directory, the first one of this type, was mainly to provide information which will strengthen regional co-operation in research in this field and promote greater exchange of ideas and information between institutions, as well as between individual researchers."
