AbstractThe Covid-19 pandemic created challenges that hindered organizations' and coaches' ability to engage in promoting development through sport. It became virtually impossible for stakeholders to create supportive environments that promoted personal development and well-being because organizations were not allowed to receive athletes and coaches were not allowed to have practices or play games. Nonetheless, the developmental needs of young athletes remained and, in many cases increased. That was particularly true in low-income areas around the world, which were disproportionally affected by the pandemic increasing its residents' needs for social support, self-fulfillment, confidence, and community engagement. As such, the present chapter aims to describe how sport coaches coached without sports by addressing a number of questions: What was the role of youth sport coaches in fostering development during the Covid-19 pandemic? What was the biggest challenges during the Covid-19 pandemic for coaches engaging youth in underserved communities in physical activity and personal development? What strategies coaches used during the Covid-19 pandemic to foster the athletic and personal developmental outcomes of their youth athletes? The present chapter addresses these questions taking a theory-to-practice approach to examine the experiences of youth sport coaches in a sport for development non-profit organization in Montreal, Canada. The chapter first presents youth development through sport and youth sport coaching theoretical frameworks using them to guide our understanding and potential solutions to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Second, the case of a non-profit sport for development organization called Pour 3 Points is presented to understand the experiences and challenges faced by youth sport coaches in underserved communities in Montreal during the Covid-19 pandemic. The chapter concludes with lessons learned and key recommendations for sport organizations and youth sport coaches, which can inform sport for development efforts worldwide. (geändert). (Autor).
