Abstract | For many years, the guiding principle behind the current restructuring of higher education has centred on words like "deregulated", "unchained" and "entrepreneurial". The objective is to model higher education institutions on production companies and manage them like commercial operations. Students are to become paying customers; working conditions and terms of employment for staff engaged in teaching and research, as well as those in technical and administrative functions, are being increasingly deregulated and flexibilised. Elite universities, autocratic management structures, stony career paths, faster degrees, the marketing of teaching and research - these are the hallmarks of this approach. (DIPF/Orig.). |
