Abstract | Since the introduction of syllabuses based on the Common European Framework of Reference, cross-language mediation (CLM) has become an established routine in foreign-language classrooms. It is generally accepted that CLM should be part of plurilingual education, but it remains unclear to what extent psycholinguistic processes in foreign language acquisition (FLA) are also facilitated. This article assesses the impact of CLM on FLA. It identifies the main principles of FLA, discusses how CLM follows these principles and concludes that CLM can play a role in each of them, though different degrees. Output and explicit learning may be fostered by CLM, but it does less to support input and implicit learning. Nevertheless, much depends on task design. Further research is outlined which should show whether CLM contributes to optional conditions in classroom-based foreign language learning. (Verlag). |
