Abstract	Der vorliegende Beitrag gibt Einblick in die Arbeit des Chicagoer Settlementhauses Hull House im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert. Skizziert werden neben dessen Ausrichtung und Rezeption das soziale Raumverständnis dessen Gründerin Jane Addams (1860-1935). Für Addams waren die Beteiligung der Lernenden und der Rekurs auf ihre alltäglichen Erfahrungen zentraler Ausgangspunkt aller Bildungsbemühungen - der Raum war für sie ein möglicher Ort kollaborativen Lernens, der liebevoll gestaltet wurde und zum Verweilen und Wohlfühlen und gleichzeitig zum Mitgestalten und Ausprobieren einlud. Entsprechend der Offenheit des sozialräumlichen Konzeptes von Hull House und dessen Ausrichtung an den Bedürfnissen der NachbarInnen entwickelte sich dieser Lernraum reziprok zum umliegenden Sozialraum. Durch die Gemeinschaft im Hull House entfaltete der Raum eine symbolische Wirkung, die wesentlich zur Aktivierung der NutzerInnen der Bildungsangebote und auch der BewohnerInnen, der sog. "Residents", beitrug. Der Beitrag untersucht und belegt anhand der Dimensionen Ganzheitlichkeit, Professionalisierung, AdressatInnenorientierung und Zusammenleben, dass die Ideen und das Wirken Addams' wesentliche Anknüpfungspunkte und Impulse für die aktuelle Weiterentwicklung der Erwachsenenbildung und Weiterbildung in Österreich bieten. This article provides information about the work of the Hull House settlement house in Chicago at the end of the 19th century, outlining its orientation and reception along with the understanding of social space of its founder Jane Addams (1860-1935). For Addams, the starting point for all educational endeavours was the participation of learners and their drawing on their daily experiences - the space was a place where collaborative learning was possible; lovingly arranged, it invited one to linger and feel at ease while helping to organise and trying one's hand at something. In accordance with the concept of social space at Hull House and its orientation to the needs of its neighbours as potential clientele, this learning space and the surrounding social space developed hand in hand. Through the Hull House community, the space developed a symbolic impact that significantly contributed to empowering the users of educational offerings and also the residents. Referring to the factors professionalization, orientation to recipients and living together, the article investigates and proves how the ideas and the impact of Addams provide significant starting points and stimulus for the current development of adult education and continuing education in Austria.
