| Abstract | In Europe, foreign language education starts between the age of six and nine. Especially young learners are assumed to be enthusiastic about this subject. With this study we aimed to investigate whether this beginner motivation in primary school can be maintained into secondary education or whether a drop in motivation is more likely. 301 fifth graders who had just entered secondary education in Germany completed a comprehensive survey on their motivation to further acquire English, possible determinants for this motivation, and their past primary school experiences. The same tool was again administered at the end of the school year. Results first reveal that both, attitudes and performance are related to learning motivation. Second, we could not identify a drop in motivation during transition into secondary education, however the tendency for decreasing motivation within its first year. (Verlag). |
