Abstract	Excellent teaching. Clearly a worthy goal for lecturers and their institutions to strive for. But when, where and how does it emerge? What will facilitate it, what will impede it? In other words, what are the principles, structures, and requirements of excellent teaching? In different articles, written by academic actors ranging from deans and chancellors to young lecturers, this book addresses these questions from four different perspectives: governance (with a focus on supportive university structures), higher-education research (with a focus on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning movement), hands-on (with concrete teaching examples from different German universities and one Chinese university) and visibility (with a focus on teaching award winning lectures).
