Abstract	Teaching can only be effective, let alone excellent, if students have a chance to learn in an environment that is reasonably free from distractions - and a crisis situation is, of course, a major distraction during which little or no learning is possible. Various factors can contribute to an increased likelihood that students will suffer such a time of crisis during their studies, but also that they seek support from university staff. This chapter discusses how conversations with students during consultations should be structured in order to give them the security in communication that they need. The objective is to ensure that advisors and lectures do not feel helpless and overwhelmed in crisis consultations, but instead are able to offer students support and further assistance. Finally, the contents of a higher education training course offered at the University of Lübeck to its staff and faculty is discussed.
