Abstract	Computer games are a highly motivating activity that is pursued voluntarily by millions of people around the globe each day. Gamers sometimes play for a very long time and very intensely, collecting so-called experience points (XPs) by solving tasks of increasing difficulty. At the University of Lübeck, we established an 'XP-based' assessment system for lectures in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics): Instead of an exam, the students collect XPs, from which their final grades are derived. Past lectures indicated that a high potential for motivation is slumbering here: After merely changing the grading system, a very strong impact on the learning climate could already be observed. The students showed a lot more motivation for (advanced) exercises and at the same time reported stress relief. In this chapter, we describe how we implemented the XP-System in a course on bioinformatics and present what we learned from analysing the students' evaluation over the last four years.
