AbstractIn Germany, more than 200,000 people are hard of hearing or deaf. However, the hearing majority in society is mostly unaware that the deaf community has its own independent and fully-fledged means of communication, namely the sign languages. Deaf people are all potential patients and communication problems between the doctor and the patient are likely to occur when doctors are unaware of sign languages and its use. Surprisingly, neither deafness nor sign language appear in the human medicine curriculum. Therefore, about a decade ago I established a seminar on this topic for medical students at the University of Lübeck. To my knowledge, it was the first course of this kind especially for medical students in the German-speaking area. The aim of the course was (and is) to reduce fears of contact of prospective doctors towards their deaf patients. As a hearing person, when you meet and interact with deaf people, you should take into consideration that they are not voiceless: deaf people do not have a cognitive, but merely a sensory problem.
