Abstract | The theory of multilingual learning focuses on the development of multilingual metalinguistic cognitive and transcultural competencies. Since 2013 the team "Schulen auf dem Weg zu einem Gesamtsprachencurriculum" at the local school board in Bolzano, consisting of teachers from primary, secondary and upper-secondary schools, has been planning and implementing different forms of plurilingual teaching methodologies based on the "Mehrsprachencurriculum Südtirol" (South Tyrolean curriculum for multilingualism). In this process, the acquisition of plurilingual competencies could be observed at all different school levels. For this evaluative research, teachers' observations regarding the increase of multilingual competencies of students were collected by means of questionnaires. The aim was to analyse the development of teachers' competencies in the field of multilingual teaching and classroom observation. The data analysis illustrates the teachers' observation regarding the steady cross-curricular development of multilingual competencies in the following areas: Dealing with multilingualism and multiculturalism in and outside school, metalinguistic awareness, and the application of transfer and learning strategies. The progressive increase in complexity of the learning processes at different school levels is documented along with the corresponding learning settings. Finally new focus areas for future teacher training and formation, emerging form the data analysis are identified and listed. (Verlag, adapt.). |
