Abstract | Adolescence is traditionally regarded as an important period for the development of news consumption habits. In today's high-choice media environment, an apparently endless variety of news can be accessed across multiple platforms as well as numerous entertainment formats. This enables adolescents to compose their individual information menu - but also to completely avoid news content. Using survey data of N = 1,958 adolescents aged around 14, the study identified four different news user types: The news avoider, the digital soft news fan, the traditional news consumer, and the interested news junkies. All groups reported comparable levels of news-related self-efficacy and a strong duty to keep informed. However, positive outcome expectations regarding information and entertainment were particularly articulated by news junkies and traditional news consumers. (DIPF/Orig.). |
