| Abstract | Conflicts are often rooted in different woldviews. According to which ethical framework can they be dealt with? 20 years after the publication of Michael Byram's highly influential work "Teaching and Assessing Intercultural Communicative Competence" and more than 15 years after the publication of the Common European Framework, this question still remains unanswered. It has, however, gained importance in a globalized world where violent conflicts no longer occur in distant places, but are being imported to Europe. If foreign language didactics keeps ignoring this reality, it will not be able to fulfill its aim to contribute to the education for a democratic citizenship. Moreover, it will fail to prepare students for situations where Intercultural Competence is mostly needed, namely for conflicts. This paper examines this basic problem of intercultural learning and proposes the concept of Evolutionary Humanism as an ethical framework for (inter-)cultural learning in the foreign language classroom.
