Abstract | Prejudices and clichés of teenangers concerning "classical music", its composers, musicians and listeners as well as possible factors influencing these stereotyped ideas were investigated by means of a two-stage research approach including a qualitative xplorative study and a quantitative verification. The results prove the existence of manifold 'typical' conceptions concerning classical music in the teenagers' thinking, though these are very differentiated with regard to contents and influencing variables. A factor analysis revealed five 'basic stereotypes', the most important of which concerned the (old) age and the (high) level of education of classical music lovers. While the teenagers' level of education seems to have little influence on their thinking in stereotypes, their experiences with classical music are very significant, be it as listener or as performing musician.
