In the form of a vade mecum, the triad of ambivalence - socialization - identity is used to explore the general proposition that an elaborated concept of ambivalence is fruitful for theoretical, empirical and practical work in the fields of socialization research. The point of departure is the assumption that intergenerational relationships between parents and children in every phase of life are the prototype for socialization. These relationships can illustrate how relevant the idea of ambivalence is in everyday life. Using this idea for research purposes requires an elaborated conceptualisation, including a differentiated definition and research-oriented heuristic conjectures. It involves the distinction between dimensions of ambivalence and formulation of hypotheses. The focus is on the interactive relativity between the experience of ambivalences and the constitution and reconstitution of personal and collective identities. Following a brief discussion of current topics in socialization research, the quintessence of this vade mecum is summarized in five basic principles. |
