Abstract | This paper aims at outlining, justifying, and differentiating mixed methods research within this structure. To do so, it first deals with research paradigms in the social sciences to give a short overview on the basic philosophical worldviews of postpositivism, constructivism, and pragmatism, thus creating an epistemological background. In a second step we focus the problem of terminology within the third paradigm, because the idea of triangulation is only one of many rationales for mixed methods research. Third, the question of quality in mixed methods research is dealt with. Since one focus of this paper lies on prototypical designs and the idea of constructing designs in mixed methods research, section 5 explains and discusses four major research designs, and section 6 demonstrates how to construct desi s. Finally, a critical appreciation of mixed methods research rounds off the paper. (Autor). |
