Abstract | The international environmental movement comprises both natural and social living conditions. But albeit the discussion about sustainable development concerning so-called "world heritage", such topics were never integrated in textbooks used in Bavarian primary schools for Heimat- und Sachunterricht. From an anthropological standpoint, however, there are a number of arguments why pictures, which display world heritage monuments and are provided with a commentary, should be inserted into textbooks for younger pupils: Welcoming sights, such as a newly renovated castle, or, in contrast, an unprepossessing object, such as a decaying ruin, support an aesthetical alphabetisation by emotional access. Furthermore, connections can be established with intercultural education as well as with coping with the media in a global world. Moreover, as a means to restore permanence in times of change, "world heritage" pictures can support education to responsibility and orientation in life. The topic "world heritage" includes a vast range of objects to be presented to pupils in picture-format. As students are given the chance to get to know world-known sights and monuments, they are encouraged to actively stand up for the protection of our cultural heritage. |
