This paper presents data on teacher-training students' mathematics anxiety and it describes an instrument measuring math anxiety. The newly developed inventory for the context-specific measurement of mathematics anxiety (MA-KON) differentiates between mathematical content domain, task difficulty, and task solving situation. It was administered to 209 teacher-training students to examine whether these differentiations were reflected in the dimensions of the inventory. Results of confirmatory factor analysis revealed not only a general factor of mathematics anxiety but also a significant differentiation according to three different task solving situations. In addition, a moderate correlation between general mathematics anxiety measured by the MA-KON and scores from a short version of the Math Anxiety Rating Scale (MARS) provided a first indicator of the inventory's construct validity. These future teachers also revealed significant differences in general mathematics anxiety depending on whether they were majoring in mathematics or another subject. Mathematics anxiety is higher for those teacher-training students who did not choose mathematics. |
