| Abstract | Within the context of his new reformation awareness Luther turned his attention to German as a language of religious devotion and theology. Re transcended the late medieval custom of producing devotional literature for ordinary people in their own language by using German (i.e. the language of the people) as the language of the priesthood of all believers, thus uniting Christians of all ranks. He also elevated German to the means through which God's liberating, comforting word appeals to the very heart of man. In his Bible translation Luther endeavoured to combine philological accuracy with theological accentuation and everyday language with linguistic beauty. Re appropriated existing assimilating tendencies between regional dialects and paid heed to minimalizing variants in the resulting Bible text; thus he created an amazingly robust text of great impact which has been preserved in print throughout the centuries. Luther's gift for composition using biblical language also finds expression in his other creative writings such as hymns and letters. |
