| Abstract | As research has increasingly identified in recent years, Luther did not develop his theological beliefs ex nihilo. Rather, he built on various traditions. Through his confessor Staupitz he became acquainted with the mysticism of Johannes Tauler which stimulated his new understanding of the confession beyond the purely sacramental use. The encounter with humanism facilitated his understanding of the Bible as encompassing the comforting and quickening power of the Word of God already in its literal and not only its allegorical interpretation. Gradually a skeptical attitude towards the scholastic method developed. Especially through the intensive study of the anti-Pelagian Augustine Luther discovered the radical nature of sin, which corresponds with a radicality of grace, and a different conception of human kind. This finally provoked the break with all these traditions at a central point and the originality of Luther's theology. |
