| Abstract | The present paper contains the results of the operation and the current stage of development of Velikie Luki State Academy of Physical Culture and Sport. The historical information from the time of establishment of the university as a branch to the present status of Academy is given in the paper. The contribution of heads of the institution to its formation and development at different times is revealed. Today Velikie Luki State Academy of Physical Culture and Sport holds strong positions in the field of education, logistics and human resources of the North-West region. This is one of the most popular universities for students from the areas nearby Velikie Luki, Pskov, Tver and Novgorod regions and other regions of the Russian Federation. Training is being carried out in four extended groups of specialities (areas), vocational training and continuing professional education programs. About 1,000 students are being trained on three faculties of the academy. More than 4.5 thousand graduates have been trained in the academy for 45 years. 89 teachers are working on 11 departments, including professors, doctors of sciences and PhD's, master of sports, honored workers and high achievers of physical culture and sport of the Russian Federation. More than 70% of the teaching staff have academic degrees and titles. While revealing the results of sports, educational, scientific, international and educational activities, a lot of attention in the paper is paid to the achievements of athletes who studied in Velikie Luki State Academy of Physical Culture and Sport in different years. The fact the higher school was successfully accredited in 2012 indicates the stable competency of the academy in higher education in the field of physical culture and sport, as well as available high human and research capacities.
