AbstractRecent epidemiological data have dispelled the misconception that low back pain (LBP) is a problem restricted to adults only. The lifetime prevalence of LBP in school children and adolescents varies up to 74 percent. There is also evidence of the strong link between LBP in adolescence and chronic LBP in adulthood. Based on the literature, LBP is hardly related to failure in posture. The current studies suggest that the main reason for the occurrence of LBP is the presence of inefficiency in the core stability system as well as motor control deficits. The aim of the article is to show the methods and exercises, which can be easily and safely put into the physical education program in order to prevent LBP and other musculoskeletal disorders (e.g. sport injuries). The scientific background and clinical evidence are considered as well. LBP prevention by sensorimotor and stabilizing exercises: Taking musculoskeletal disorders prevention into account, one of the duties of physical education should be to show less vulnerable movement patterns and to develop better sensorimotor abilities in pupils. This might be easier to implement in young people, who have not established their basic patterns of motion yet. Thus, exercises focused on core stability, balance, and neuromuscular control could be included into the physical education program, provided that teachers acquire current knowledge of motor control and develop their workshops. Core stability exercises and tasks developing the sensorimotor system can either be performed during a routine warm-up or can be the content of a special type of lesson. Many clinical researches indicate the high efficacy of sensorimotor and stabilizing exercises in LBP and other musculoskeletal disorders prevention and in improving sportive outcomes. It is suggested that applying those kind of exercises can make a physical education program even more attractive, lead to greater awareness of movements by pupils and benefit as a prevention of musculoskeletal disorders during adolescence as well as in adulthood.
