Abstract | Investigated individual differences in the automatic use of haptic information from interpersonal touch with a newly developed 20-item questionnaire, the Need For Interpersonal Touch Scale (NFIPT). Other assessments included Germans version of the Need for Touch scale (NFT), the Need for Cognitive Closure scale (NFCC), and the Need to Evaluate scale (NTE). The NFIPT was validated within an unrelated product evaluation task completed by 78 college students. Before entering the laboratory, subjects were briefly touched on the shoulder or received no touch. The moderating effects of NFIPT and additionally effects of need for touch (NFT) were examined when assessing confidence and frustration with the task. Results showed that higher NFIPT participants were more confident when they were briefly touched prior to the task. Effects on frustration were only found for NFT with frustration greater for individuals with higher NFT when they could not touch the product during the evaluation task. In conclusion, the NFIPT is a valid instrument for assessing individual differences regarding haptic information from interpersonal touch. (ZPID). |
