| Abstract | Abraham as a biblical person indicates an ultimate conflict in the dialogue of religions rather than a point of convergence, because this person is always seen in the narrative perspective of each religion. This can be demonstrated systematically in the context of the divine salvation history starting with Abraham and his family, and yet aiming at the universal blessing for all the people in the world. This rather peculiar story is full of conflicts illuminating God's power to create new possibilities. In the Old Testament texts, the story can be read on two levels: On the one hand, Abraham is the father of Israel as God's elected people, on the other hand, this election exposes the eschatological depth of history. In the New Testament texts concerning Abraham, this ambivalence concentrates on the question of the true descendants of Abraham and the Pauline concept of "faith" as fulfillment of the promises given to Abraham. |
