AbstractNeither side of the Atlantic has produced a comprehensive view of expressive dance and gymnastics' forms that takes account of the complex cross currents between Europe and the United States since the turn of the twentieth century. And much of what we know about the leaders of dance and expressive movement in the past results from the idealized (sometimes distorted) images of early pioneers painted by their students and contemporaries. The lack of studies around the fluent borderlines between dance and gymnastics and their relationship to physical education also makes it difficult to disentangle and define them separately. So it seems important to document the ongoing relation of expressive dance and gymnastics activities to educational changes and philosophies, and to physical education practices in specific times and places. The author frames an historical analyses of expressive movements along three dimensions: i) the ongoing practices themselves, ii) the biographies of specific practitioners and innovators, and iii) the social, political and economic struggles to make meaning and wield power at particular historical moments and in specific contexts. Using this framework the author analyses some important forms of expressive movement in dance and gymnastics which developed around the turn of the 20th century and shows how they were taken up by innovators in particular locations, affecting physical education philosophy and practice on both sides of the Atlantic.
