Abstract | Hungary, Russia and the other countries in the region have to accomodate the new reality of Europe if they do not want to become isolated and left behind in scientifc and economic developments. Here, as in most countries, problem solving in education is complicated, since so many stakeholders are involved. Much is written on educational change and suggestions are made, but little is accomplished. Financial difficulties, political dickering and poor support are the main reasons why reforms are halted or hindered. The burden of history further complicates and delays change. The economy is moving ahead, and education lags behind. [The author] argues that the economic development and the development of education need to be seen in a European context, and he writes that the only way to catch up with Europe and the world in both aspects is to develop education.
