Abstract | The author was attracted to early care and education from the first time he entered a center in 1984. It was a place of joy with children laughing and teachers making every moment a learning experience for children. Early care and education fascinated him in so many ways beyond the classroom as well. Whether for profit or nonprofit, public or private, to be successful one had to be a business person/educator in order to keep the lights on everyday so the magic could happen in each of those classrooms. The demands on the staff, and the director in particular, were huge, but if done in harmony, oh what a beautiful thing! The simple question to be answered is this: What must one do to make the child-teacher-parent dynamic a world class experience for everyone in this building? Consider conducting a school "pulse" survey. A school pulse survey does not have to be burdensome or long, but does have to be honest, transparent, and intentional. If done at least annually with respect for people's opinions and guaranteed confidentiality, these surveys can be both an agent for positive systematic change and team bonding that demonstrates mutual respect and ultimate goal congruency.
